What is a UX Designer and why do I need one?

In the age of all things digital, it is no longer enough to have a website. Now, you need to have a website that can drive leads, engagement, brand awareness and gives a customer exactly what they are looking for.

Sounds like quite the tall order, am I right? It seems like hiring a web designer would be the quick fix and it is not always the case. Enter the UX Designer, UX stands for User Experience, which essentially boils down to what experience does the user have on the page, app or website.

Isn’t that what a web designer is for?

This is always a complex question: yes and no. I find that it depends on what background the web designer has and what the client needs. I think that a common misconception is that UX is all about the design. I do not think that this is the case. I find that UX has a lot more that goes into it. For example: there is research, user testing, prototyping and so on.

So, some web designers may have a UX background and some UX designers may have a web design background. The keyword there being ‘may’, which is why it is so important to interview the candidate and examples of their past work.

Okay, but do I need a UX Designer?

Personal opinion: yes, I think that you do.

Here is why: most people assume that they know what their users want. The truth of the matter is that you do not know what your customers want, you know what you want your customers to want.

You do not know what your customers want, you know what YOU want your customers to want.

What that means is that we tend to think we know what we want and therefore that is what the customer wants. If that is working for your company, great, but chances are if you are reading this article, it is not.

How do I find a UX Designer?

Great question, some of my favorites are LinkedInUpWork and Remote.com. Each of them has their own benefits and it will be up to you to decide what is the best fit.

Here are things that I look for in a UX Designer:

  • Similar projects to my own
  • Understanding of trends
  • What software they are familiar with
  • How well they can translate ‘UX speak’ to ‘normal’ speak

Bear in mind that I fall into that UX/Web Designer combo and so I tend to be a little pickier. The proper UX designer will be able to think about what your user is going to experience on the site and generate a product that matches your needs.
